The Wilhelm Reich Museum is pleased to present a Zoom book launch with author Philip Bennett, who will be in conversation with Hannah Zeavin to mark the publication of his new book from Brill.

From Communism to Work Democracy is the first book devoted to Wilhelm Reich’s social and political thought and activities. It is an intellectual history, showing the evolution of Reich’s thought from a rather conventional 1920s-style communism, to a form of anarchism, to his unique concept of work democracy, all shaped by his understanding of Marxism. The book works with archival material not previously known or studied, and marks a huge leap in understanding Reich’s life, work, and overall intellectual trajectory.

Myron Sharaf, Pursuer of the Emotional Truth

There comes a time in life when we are called to remember those who have affected us deeply, who have been transformative in our development, who have helped us to change the course of our lives, who have been compassionate and supportive on our journey.  There will be a gathering to reflect on how Myron Sharaf, Ph.D., a psychologist, therapist, author and gifted teacher was present for us as clients and patients, students and colleagues, friends and family – the man who challenged us, provoked us, who breathed and sighed with us, helping us to stay with the myriad of feelings that arose.  Even if Reich is new to you, or you don’t know of Sharaf’s contributions, you will be welcomed to be with us on this day.

On Saturday, September 26th we will gather together to listen to and share stories about our lived experience with Myron and learn from one another the power and import of Myron’s special role in the history and development of the work of Wilhelm Reich. Memories, anecdotes, reflections and observations from then and now will inform our understanding of this remarkable man and how he touched our lives.

New Thought Vermont and the Wilhelm Reich Museum are cooperating together to offer this special day of reflection and remembrance of Myron Sharaf who was a patient and student of Wilhelm Reich and wrote Fury on Earth:  A Biography of Wilhelm Reich.

We hope that you’ll join us for this unique event which will feature comments by Myron’s clients, students, colleagues, and friends.  And, of course, that includes you – for us to hear what you have to share too!  Whether you knew Myron or not, you are welcome to join us and learn how he worked, related and developed Reich’s work!

Past Webinars

Children of the Future: Online Reading Group via Zoom video: Led by Jennifer Evans, PhD
took place March 23rd through May 11th (6 sessions total)
Information only, no recording available.

Audience: Open to attendees interested in early childhood development, sexuality education and therapy, social justice, and the historical development of Reich’s work. No prerequisites necessary. Attendees should plan to attend all 6 sessions if they are able. If an occasional session is missed, it is understandable, but the goal is to build knowledge and understanding as a group. There will be no recording, and this will be a supportive and confidential space.

Goal: Read and discuss selections from Children of the Future: On the Prevention of Sexual Pathology as a group. This is a collection of writings by Wilhelm Reich on childhood sexuality written between 1926 and 1952 and published posthumously. In the preface to the book, William Steig writes: “Why do we humans, in many ways the most intelligent of all animals, fail to realize what every dog, or whale, or mouse spontaneously knows–that he is part of nature and must cooperate with it, obey its laws? Why are we estranged from life? What is wrong with us, with our way of rearing our children?” In this reading group, we will explore these questions and discuss Reich’s views of the natural self-regulatory capacity of children and how we can raise our children to be healthy, emotionally free individuals while living in an armored world.

Objectives:

  • To explore primary source documents to better understand Reich’s views in his own words.
  • To spark discussion around the topic of sex positive childrearing for the prevention of sexual pathology.
  • To discuss and evaluate the applicability of Reich’s work to modern problems around childhood sex education and sexuality.

Agenda:

March 23: “The Source of the Human No” and “Children of the Future” (pages 3-21)
March 30: “Problems of Healthy Children during the First Puberty” (pages 22-63)
April 13: “Meeting the Emotional Plague” (pages 71-88)
April 20: “Armoring in a Newborn Infant” (pages 89-113)
April 27: “Concerning Childhood Masturbation” and “A Conversation with a Sensible Mother” (pages 140-160)

May 11: “The Sexual Rights of Youth” (pages 161-221)

About: Jennifer Evans is an independent scholar based in Atlanta, GA. She earned her doctorate in the History of Science from Harvard University. Her dissertation focused on Wilhelm Reich’s bioelectrical experiments, examining their scientific and cultural context and influence on the development of Reich’s thought. She holds a certificate in Sexuality Education from the University of Michigan School of Social Work and is discovering new and creative ways to make Reich’s work on the function of the orgasm accessible to a modern audience.
